Upon looking into a pair of blind, opaque eyes, the main character of this book by Anthony Doerr is reminded of a French Phrase meaning “beautiful ugly.” The words really struck me as I have always had a fascination with materials, objects, homes, and places that are disintegrating, worn, or abandoned - there is something haunting and somehow comforting about them and most definitely, in my eyes anyway, beautiful ugly
